How do i talk to this guy without looking like a wierdo?

Im friends with this guy who i kind of like, and I want to become better friends with him, but its really hard to talk to him because he isnt in any of my cles at school and i only see him at lunch sometimes because he plays football at lunch most days, and after school on friday. How do i talk to him during these sparse times without looking like a desperate wierdo, i do kind of want him to know that i like him. how do i subtly hint at it?
