You should never trust Wikipedia on such matters. The Norman Bates character would have initially suffered from paranoid schizophrenia, presumably triggered by an Oedipal crisis (which would have been brought on by chemical imbalance, poor parenting, or both). That led to delusional thinking, and caused him to murder his mother when he felt betrayed by her. His dissociative identity disorder developed out of his overwhelming feelings of guilt and self-hatred following that act.
