When is the official first day of my period?

I'm currently trying to get pregnant and pinpoint my ovulation date. However in order to do this, i need to know when the official first day of my period was. I began spotting brown for about three days, then red and then heavy bleeding. Is the first day the day i bagan spotting brown or red?
