I don't know about how to find out the name of the boat if you don't have any family mementos of the trip, but a good place to start for finding out about records in Italy would be to ask the Italian Consulate General in NYC. They can tell you where such records would be held, where to write to get a copy of them, and whether or not you'll need to write in Italian.
